Back our demands on rent controls

Throughout the rest of April until 17 May, Scottish Parliament is surveying tenants and landlords on their views on rent controls to scrutinise the bill. The evidence gathered from this survey will support or undermine the legislation and so will have a powerful impact on whether or not tenants across Scotland have the security to afford their homes.

Endorse our response to Parliament's survey below and we will submit your response on the basis of our answers. Here is Living Rent's organisational response.

You can also choose to fill it out yourself on Parliament's website. Here is a guide that we have developed to answer the questions.

Rent controls’ effectiveness is hanging in the balance. Landlords know that any rent controls will have a huge impact on their ability to make huge profits and they are fighting tooth and nail to ensure that any rent controls are as watered down as possible.

We have seen how organised they are. The process is stacked against us.

We have built our union to support ourselves specifically for situations like this.

Endorse our demands.

Tell the Scottish government that we need:

  • Rent controls that bring rents down.
  • Rent controls that improve quality without increasing the rent.
  • Rent controls tied to the property, not the tenancy, which will protect both new and sitting tenants.
  • Greater protections against evictions.
